Headquarters: KPDP is now fully established
with a functioning Secretariat, which is headed, by the
Executive Director and other support staff.

Mobilization
of members: KPDP has been able to mobilize
over 2.5 million members with various disabilities through
out the country and has also been able to register 120
affiliate organizations throughout the country that serves
as our focal points through which we disseminate information
to Persons With Disabilities at grassroot level. We have
therefore, sufficient structures in place to know the
needs of Persons With Disabilities and to effectively
communicate with them. The total membership of the affiliate
organizations is 2 million. The total membership of KPDP
as for now stands at 2.5 million people with various categories
of disabilities.

Wheelchair
Distribution: KPDP has successfully distributed
over 500 wheelchairs worth Ksh.25 million throughout the
country.

Advocacy:
KPDP has been able to lobby for the Disability Bill 2000,
which has finally been referred to Parliament for discussion
from 2nd April 2003. KPDP played a leading role in collecting
and collating the views from Persons With Disabilities
and the final draft of the Bill. KPDP has also been in
the frontline in lobbying for its enactment into Law since
the recommendations were forwarded to the Court in 1998.
KPDP has also contributed
immensely in the new constitutional process and has been
able to cause the Constitution Review Commission capture
a lot of views for enactment in the New Constitution.
(KPDP has set up Pilot
Projects for Micro-Finance targeting Persons With Disabilities
in Rural areas, Community Based Organizations for Widows,
Community Based Rehabilitation Centers for Orphans in Western
Kenya). All Pilot Projects are in operation now.
KPDP has started Medical
Projects and Educational Projects for sponsoring Disabled
Persons for special treatment internationally and locally
and also sponsoring disabled children, youth, and non-disabled
children born out of disabled parents for their education.

Land Allocation:
KPDP has acquired to date 4 plots as follows:
i. The
Government of Kenya in recognition of the good work KPDP
has undertaken within a very short time of its existence
has awarded KPDP
5 ½ acres of land in the city suburbs of Ruai for
the construction of a home, of the poor disabled persons,
a clinic, a school, a conference center with hostel and
hotel facilities. We will also construct on the same plot
staff quarters and administration blocks.
(a) The
Government of Kenya through the Ministry of Lands and Settlement
has allocated KPDP 8 acres of land in Nairobi suburbs in
Athi River area for construction of KPDP Headquarters with
many infrastructures like a huge conference center, a referral
hospital, sheltered workshops, an academy and other administrative
infrastructures.
(b) The
Ministry of Lands and Settlement has also offered to design
and quantify the costs of this construction at a nominal
fee. Provision estimates for this work have already been
forwarded to us by the Ministry.
ii. In
Western Kenya where we have most of our Pilot Projects we
have identified 2 portions of land of 10 acres each on which
we need to construct Rehabilitation Centers, hospitals,
conference facilities, homes for the needy and sheltered
workshops.

Government
Interaction: KPDP has also won the hearts
of many senior Government Officials and it has been working
closely with the Government top official, Members of Parliament
in their respective constituencies throughout the country;
the latest of which was a colorful function where we were
invited to attend the function at the Vice President’s
home on 29th March 2003 where KPDP donated 15 wheelchairs
and the National Chairman had a chance to address a mammoth
crowd of over 30,000 persons that came to attend the function.
