Project Achievements

Within the short time KPDP has been in operation we have been able to achieve the following:

  1. Secretariat Headquarters: KPDP is now fully established with a functioning Secretariat, which is headed, by the Executive Director and other support staff.

  2. Mobilization of members: KPDP has been able to mobilize over 2.5 million members with various disabilities through out the country and has also been able to register 120 affiliate organizations throughout the country that serves as our focal points through which we disseminate information to Persons With Disabilities at grassroot level. We have therefore, sufficient structures in place to know the needs of Persons With Disabilities and to effectively communicate with them. The total membership of the affiliate organizations is 2 million. The total membership of KPDP as for now stands at 2.5 million people with various categories of disabilities.

  3. Wheelchair Distribution: KPDP has successfully distributed over 500 wheelchairs worth Ksh.25 million throughout the country.

  4. Advocacy: KPDP has been able to lobby for the Disability Bill 2000, which has finally been referred to Parliament for discussion from 2nd April 2003. KPDP played a leading role in collecting and collating the views from Persons With Disabilities and the final draft of the Bill. KPDP has also been in the frontline in lobbying for its enactment into Law since the recommendations were forwarded to the Court in 1998.
  5. KPDP has also contributed immensely in the new constitutional process and has been able to cause the Constitution Review Commission capture a lot of views for enactment in the New Constitution.

(KPDP has set up Pilot Projects for Micro-Finance targeting Persons With Disabilities in Rural areas, Community Based Organizations for Widows, Community Based Rehabilitation Centers for Orphans in Western Kenya). All Pilot Projects are in operation now.

KPDP has started Medical Projects and Educational Projects for sponsoring Disabled Persons for special treatment internationally and locally and also sponsoring disabled children, youth, and non-disabled children born out of disabled parents for their education.

  6. Land Allocation: KPDP has acquired to date 4 plots as follows:

  7. i. The Government of Kenya in recognition of the good work KPDP has undertaken within a very short time of its existence has awarded KPDP
5 ½ acres of land in the city suburbs of Ruai for the construction of a home, of the poor disabled persons, a clinic, a school, a conference center with hostel and hotel facilities. We will also construct on the same plot staff quarters and administration blocks.

    (a) The Government of Kenya through the Ministry of Lands and Settlement has allocated KPDP 8 acres of land in Nairobi suburbs in Athi River area for construction of KPDP Headquarters with many infrastructures like a huge conference center, a referral hospital, sheltered workshops, an academy and other administrative infrastructures.

    (b) The Ministry of Lands and Settlement has also offered to design and quantify the costs of this construction at a nominal fee. Provision estimates for this work have already been forwarded to us by the Ministry.

ii. In Western Kenya where we have most of our Pilot Projects we have identified 2 portions of land of 10 acres each on which we need to construct Rehabilitation Centers, hospitals, conference facilities, homes for the needy and sheltered workshops.

  8. Government Interaction: KPDP has also won the hearts of many senior Government Officials and it has been working closely with the Government top official, Members of Parliament in their respective constituencies throughout the country; the latest of which was a colorful function where we were invited to attend the function at the Vice President’s home on 29th March 2003 where KPDP donated 15 wheelchairs and the National Chairman had a chance to address a mammoth crowd of over 30,000 persons that came to attend the function.
